Can Clear Aligners Reduce Jaw Pain?

clear aligners Swampscott, MA

In recent years, more patients are seeking a convenient alternative to traditional wire braces such as clear aligners. Invisalign® uses a series of removable custom-made aligners that gradually adjust teeth and improve bite issues. Patients should notice a reduction in jaw pain as their bite pattern improves.

Invisalign® basics

Invisalign® clear aligners can correct crooked, crowded, and gapped teeth, all of which place more wear and tear on the jaws. Aligner therapy may be utilized to improve misaligned bites and correct chewing function to minimze TMJ disorders and other similar jaw issues. Treatment time depends on multiple factors but typically ranges from six to 18 months. The cost varies widely and depends on the patient's individual dental needs.

Who is a candidate for Invisalign®?

Invisalign® is designed primarily for adults, but teenagers and children may also be deemed candidates by the dentist. Before beginning treatment, the dentist can determine if you are a good candidate by examining the teeth and bite function. The dentist also takes impressions and X-rays of the teeth and jaw.

It is also important that the dentist and patient discuss the importance of compliance to ensure the therapy will be effective. The clear aligners, often called trays, are made of BPA-free thermoplastic and must be worn day and night. Periodic check-ups will also be recommended so the dentist can evaluate the progress.

What are the advantages of Invisalign®?

Unlike traditional braces, Invisalign® only requires a few minor adjustments to the daily routine. Other advantages of choosing clear aligners over braces include the following:

  • Attractive, clear and discreet
  • Comfortable to wear without wires or metal to cause gum irritation
  • Easy to remove and clean
  • Simple to brush and floss teeth unencumbered
  • Convenient with no limitations on eating chewy or hard foods

The Invisalign® process

Once a patient chooses Invisalign®, the dentist will send dental records, impressions and X-rays to a lab to create the custom aligners. The trays are designed to be worn for a period of two weeks. Patients need to wear their aligners for 20 to 22 hours each day to ensure treatment will be effective. They should only be removed while eating and for hygiene routines.

How the aligners work

The clear aligners apply pressure to the teeth so they will gradually shift into the desired place. Over time, the teeth become straighter and the patient has a more even-looking smile. Invisalign® can also have a positive impact on the shape of a patient's face and make features more symmetrical.

Patients who suffer from jaw pain may experience relief during Invisalign® treatment. The aligners can help protect teeth from grinding at night, thereby decreasing inflammation of jaw muscles. As therapy progresses, the upper and lower jaws will become properly aligned and this too can decrease jaw pain.

Conclusion

Invisalign® treatment provides patients with the opportunity to have a straighter smile without the discomfort associated with traditional braces. Patients suffering from jaw pain or bite issues may also notice relief of symptoms during and after clear aligners therapy.
