Recovering From a Tooth Extraction

Tooth Extraction Swampscott, MA

Tooth extraction is not something that anyone looks forward to; however, it is often necessary in order to restore oral health. Thankfully, modern-day technology has allowed for innovative practices, which help to reduce discomfort, swelling, and bleeding. Nonetheless, after the fact, there are still a few important things to do in order to recover properly. Keep reading to find out more!

Tooth extraction recovery tips

The following tips come from a general dentist, and they are advised after a tooth extraction has been done. It can be helpful to review this information when preparing for one or more teeth to be pulled.

Rest and take time off

The most important thing to do after a tooth extraction is to rest and take time off. A lot of individuals are eager to get back to normal life; however, it is best to rest for a few hours or a day at the very minimum. Most dentists recommend that a day is taken off of work or school to ensure proper recovery. While the oral cavity is what is being worked on, the entire body is usually affected due to the open wound and use of anesthesia.

Avoid eating risky foods

Risky foods can compromise the healing wound after tooth extraction. Dentists recommend eating a soft food diet immediately after the procedure. This helps to keep discomfort and inflammation at a minimum. Some of the risky foods include meats, taffies, and raw vegetables. Instead, soups and smoothies are highly recommended as this is easy on the wound.

Oral hygiene

A lot of individuals are eager to avoid oral hygiene after a tooth extraction; however, this can do damage. Dentists recommend rinsing with salt water at least a few times afterward. Salt water is gentle, but can naturally clean the area. Additionally, the area around the wound should still be brushed and flossed as normal.

Oral hygiene is extremely important, especially after a tooth extraction. Because the wound makes the entire oral cavity vulnerable for bacterial growth, it is necessary to keep the area clean.

Take an over the counter medication

Over the counter medications, such as anti-inflammatories and pain relievers can be quite helpful in remedying the symptoms of a tooth extraction. Most of the time, the area is sore and swollen, both of which can be combatted with acetaminophen. Dentists recommend taking these medications with a small amount of food, milk, or water. Additionally, it is important to realize that these medications should only be used for a day or so. Any discomfort or swelling past three days should be addressed by a dentist.
